There’s a note under my door the next morning and I’m excited to see what Olive wrote to me. To my surprise, it’s not from Olive. It’s from her mom.

Do you want to have pizza with us tonight? Yes or no? Check the box.

I fist pump the sky and put a giant X under the box beneath the word yes and make my way out in the hallway just as Susannah and Olive step through the door.

“Gus,” the little munchkin screams and lunges for me. I spin her around and she giggles. I set her back down on her feet and find her mother watching me with a smile.

“Hey,” Susannah says.

“Good morning. I was just coming to give this back to you.” I hand her the note and Olive cranks her neck so she can read it with her mother.

“What does it say, Mama?”

“I asked if Gus wanted to join us for pizza making tonight.”

“Yes,” Olive shouts and jumps toward the sky. This little bug speaks my language. She’s always happy and excited about all the little things. “I love pizza night. What are you going to put on your pizza?”

“I get to make my own?” I ask, as we all walk toward the elevator.

“You sure do. We all get our own. I like pepperoni and pineapple,” Olive says.

“I enjoy both of those as well. Maybe a few vegetables too.” We step on the elevator and it all feels so easy. Natural. Like there’s nowhere else I want to be.

Susannah is standing so close to me and my hand grazes hers. I reach out and my finger wraps around hers. She doesn’t pull away.

“I don’t like vegatabs,” Olive says.

“Vegetables,” Susannah says as she chuckles at her daughter.

“Right. Hey, are you walking to your work right now? Maybe it’s by my school,” the little peanut says, and damn, if she isn’t the cutest kid I’ve ever seen.

“I happen to be going in that direction.” The doors open and Susannah pulls her hand away and reaches for Olive’s hand.

“Yay, Gus can walk with us to school again.”

“Are you sure?” Susannah mouths as she leans back to look at me.

“I’m positive. Not going anywhere, Susannah. And I owe you a muffin.”

Olive is singing some song about colors. She reaches for my hand, and we swing her every few minutes as we walk.
